Reading with Jakob Springfeld ‘The West has no idea what is happening in the East’
Attacks on refugees are on the rise, the AfD is planning massive deportations, and neo-Nazi positions have become ‘normal’ in many places. State authorities, the Bundeswehr, and our justice system are part of the problem – the firewall has long since fallen. Although the far right is on the rise nationwide, West Germany looks primarily to the east – often with condescension.
Jakob Springfeld is a student who was born and raised in Zwickau in 2002. He received the Theodor Heuss Medal in Stuttgart for his outstanding commitment to democracy and civil rights. ZEIT-Campus named him one of the 100 most important East Germans. In his book, he describes why the ground for the instrumentalisation of existential fears is particularly fertile in the east. But structural racism and right-wing extremism are problems that pose a threat to all of Germany, in Halle as well as in Hanau.
Two years after reading from his first book ‘Unter Nazis. Young, East German, against the right’, Jakob Springfeld is coming to Lemgo again.
